The primary goal of lymphedema treatment is to prevent the increase of protein-rich fluid accumulation between tissues and to ensure a healthy lymphatic system flow.
Types of Lymphedema:
- Primary Lymphedema: Results from congenital absence or underdevelopment of lymphatic tissue.
- Secondary Lymphedema: Arises due to later causes affecting lymphatic circulation, such as surgery or radiation therapy (radiotherapy) following cancer.
- Lipoedema
- Phlebolymphostatic Lymphedema
WHY ROMMER?
Adherence to the treatment plan developed by the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialist affects the success of the treatment. Treatment may take longer than a month, and success cannot be achieved without proper implementation.
Treatment Objectives:
Reduce swelling and prevent recurrence.
Proper skin care is essential. Moisturizer should be applied to the arm or leg twice daily, in an upward direction.
Treatment Stages:
Manual Lymph Drainage: This is crucial and should be performed by trained and experienced practitioners.
Bandaging: If there is a significant difference in circumference (2-2.5 cm between limbs), bandaging treatment begins. Specialized bandages with short stretch are used for multi-layer application.
Compression Garments: Once the circumference difference is within the desired limits, compression garments are introduced.
Additional Measures: Pneumatic compression devices and exercises are used. Exercises are an essential part of the treatment and should be performed regularly during follow-up and for preventive purposes afterward.
