When the nerves are compressed in the thin canals through which they pass, nerve compression is the result. The most common causes include nerve compression in areas such as the wrist, elbow and knee. Symptoms are usually manifested as hand numbness that wakes you up at night or weakness in the feet. A detailed history is taken and a physical examination is performed for diagnosis, followed by tests such as EMG.
