Spinal cord injuries are injuries to the bones of the spine, the spinal cord or both. They can occur as a result of various accidents and can result in fractures of the bones surrounding the spinal cord. These injuries can lead to damage to the nerves surrounding the spinal cord, which can cause loss of sensation, loss of movement and impairment of other functions. The treatment of spinal cord injuries depends on the severity, type and location of the injury. Methods such as immobilisation medication, surgery and rehabilitation can be used.
For such patients, rehabilitation and physiotherapy are vital treatment modalities. The purpose of rehabilitation is to prevent complications and to enable patients to be independent in their lives. For this purpose, the main purpose is to try to regain strength in the muscles that have lost strength. For this purpose, the following techniques are applied;
- Range of motion exercises
- Stretching exercises
- Muscle strengthening exercises
- Neuromuscular facilitation techniques
- Balance trainer
- Robotic rehabilitation
- Hydrotherapy
- Orthosis
- Rehabilitation technics such as functional neuromuscular electrical stimulation and biofeedback
In order to prevent muscle wasting, in-bed exercises should be applied and the patient should be brought to a vertical position as soon as possible. The patient should be tried to walk with assistive devices and external supports as soon as possible, if conditions permit.
