Drop Foot Syndrome and Treatment

Walking and balance is an important function that takes place through the harmonious functioning of certain parts of the nervous system. There can be many causes of impairment of this function, for example, neurological diseases, muscle diseases, nerve damage, prosthetic surgeries, etc. can cause these disorders. Such impairments can negatively affect daily life and increase the risk of falls. Therefore, physical therapy and rehabilitation aims to reduce the risk of falls and increase independence.

Sensory integration therapy is used in people with balance disorders to ensure that the senses are perceived correctly and that the appropriate motor response occurs. In order to increase the success of treatment, balance and coordination exercises, physical therapy and rehabilitation as well as technological methods such as robotic rehabilitation and balance trainer (computerised balance systems) can be used.

Our brain organises the sensations coming from the environment in order to use our body effectively in our daily life activities and in our relationships with our environment. In people with balance disorders, this organisation cannot be done completely and this closely affects the balance coordination of the person. This is where Sensory Integration Therapy comes into play. The aim of this therapy is to perceive the senses correctly and to ensure that this perceived sensation is transmitted to the central nervous system correctly and that the appropriate motor response occurs.
