One of the methods used in the treatment of pulmonary diseases is cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. It is particularly applied in respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease such as COPD. The basis of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation programmes is exercise. Heart and lung functions are improved, muscles are strengthened and the feeling of shortness of breath is reduced thanks to these exercises.
The following are the exercise methods applied in Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation at Rommer International:
1. Aerobic (endurance) exercises: Vascularisation of the muscles increases, oxygen distribution to the muscles improves and shortness of breath improves with these exercises. They are applied for the lower limbs using equipment such as treadmills, free-time walking or bicycle ergometers.
2. Muscle strengthening exercises: These exercises have a positive effect on overall health and improve speed, balance and co-ordination of the patient. Strengthening of the upper arm and back muscles is aimed.
3. Upper limb and shoulder girdle exercises: It is important to strengthen the muscles in the shoulder girdle as they contribute to breathing. These muscle groups can be developed by activities such as weight training and swimming.
4. Respiratory muscle exercises: Inadequate function of the respiratory muscles can lead to shortness of breath and exercise limitations. Exercises that strengthen the respiratory muscles improve exercise capacity and quality of life. To strengthen the respiratory muscles, these exercises include various training methods..
There are many different forms of exercise used in respiratory diseases in addition to these exercise methods. Increasing the respiratory muscles and general muscle strength is the aim.
The benefits of pulmonary rehabilitation in patients with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) are as follows:
1. Increasing exercise capacity:
2. Improving quality of life and increasing independence
3. Reduction in hospital admission and hospitalisation times
4. Reducing anxiety and depression
